EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
